bus shelters

An account of the Q&A area for those taking part in the Ventnor West Parish elections. The elections sparked much debate - these discussions are part of Ventnor's history, and as so, will remain available to the public.

Sorry, I really dont know if this even falls within the Town Council's area of responsibility, so unable to give you a definative answer.
If you are not prepared to do something about it don't bitch !

Yes, yes, yes! I lived in Trinity Road until August of this year. I am a frequent bus user and they are certainly in need of that facelift.

bus shelters

Postby Louis Lawrence » Thu 06 Dec 2007 11:01 pm

As I have said in my election address , which by the way only goes to Ventnor West voters, I want to query what Ventnor Council spends almost £I00,000 on. If it ain't public amenities, what is it ? Yes bus shelters are part of the VC's remit. My 'manifesto' is on this site.

Budget

Postby mark compton-hall » Fri 07 Dec 2007 1:36 am

Hi Lulu,

I am fairly certain that you can inspect the budget yourself for last year. Just call the Town Clerk, John Farrant and ask to see it.

As far as the two shelters are concerned. I raised a question on both of them, several full town council meetings ago. I am trying to find the precise date. I also raised the condition of the shelter on the High Street.

At the time, a resolution was not agreed, but it was agreed to persue the matter with Isle of Wight Council (Highways). All three fall into Jonny Fitzgerald-Bond territory, through whom the questions need to go. He is the Councillor I have previously referred you to Lulu.

I do recall asking for support to set up a community project to take over the maintenance and repair of the shelters (aka Ventnor Enhancement Fund and the BBQ at La Falaise)

I am sure I heard part of a comment from our Town Manager (Rob) at the Civic Pride workshop this last Tuesday evening, that he was bringing in some labour from the Community Services Team to take care of the problem.

I'll re check with him and report back to you, and at the same time check his schedule for street furniture generally.

Lets see how that goes!

Hi Lulu,

The budget for bus shelters in the forecast for the current fiscal year is I believe £2K.

It was on that basis that I proposed to the Town Council that a community project be set up to match fund a small bit of that available money, through a mixture of external grants and volunteer time.

Frankly a small bit would be so small it is probably not worth bothering about. But you never know, it could just make a difference

I believe that is a viable approach, though will take some smart thinking.

What I have in mind is a mix of community service labour (Rob, the Town Manager is onto this anyway, but despite all the gloom you read about in the CP...and as I am sure Peter my candidate colleague may confirm....the labour pool is not endless and needs a lot of forward booking), augmented by public grant funding, but with serious added value from a local construction company.

I am also approaching local funding providers unique to Ventnor, and seeing if we can integrate the tidy up and subsequent looking after through a fixed revenue stream from IWC Highways. Providing we work closely with Rob, our Town Manager, then all should be well.

If you could do a little research for us Lulu, voluntarily and very kindly indeed, and find out if there any heritage links to the structures, that would help a lot.

I have not had the time Lulu to investigate this to the point of putting in a costed project outline. Some extra people time from others (qualified builders) would be very welcome!!!

You may see where everyone is coming from here?

The town council depends on the voluntary and community sector far more than many appreciate, as does the county council.

If we can all take this on board, and look for effective community partnerships, then the precept allocated will go a whole way further :)

Progress Report

Postby mark compton-hall » Thu 13 Dec 2007 11:32 am

Hi Lulu,

Just to keep you informed of progress, as you might see from the note below, received last night, from Rob our Town Manager. :

Hi Mark,
I can meet with you and Richard Baker to discuss the Trinity Road Bus shelters next week (either Monday or Thursday) let me know which is best for you?
Cheers
Rob

From this we will have an action plan and hopefully a timetable :) That should make a difference. I’ll PM you Lulu with the meeting date so you can join in if you are free. That would be nice :)
